At ISS Primary, we value arts as essential to learning through inquiry, believing that arts encourage creativity, communication, collaboration, reflection, and action in our students. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme provides our curriculum framework. Students construct understandings of big ideas in the art world based on PYP Conceptual Understandings, and student growth is evaluated through the Arts Learning Outcomes. As in all areas of curriculum and school life, students growth is also evident in PYP transdisciplinary skills, PYP attitudes, and attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
As Visual Arts teachers, we draw on current best practices in art education including promoting Studio Thinking via the Studio Habits of Mind. Artistic choice is a mainstay of our programme. We encourage artistic behavior by tapping into TAB methodology (Teaching for Artistic BehaviorTM) to design studio centers and differentiated invitations for students to create art and respond to art in their own unique ways.
